Warlocks...

Warlocks (or Wizards), were greatly feared for their reputed powers of death and destruction.

They were a deal harder to detect and were deemed to be more powerful than witches. For that reason, as good as any, they were seldom burned, as were witches, lest a powerful curse be laid upon those who tried and judged them.

‘Tam O’ Shanter’ - 1790 Robert Burns

"But Maggie stood, right sair astonish'd, Till, by the heel and hand admonish'd, She ventured forward on the light; And, wow! Tam saw an unco sight! Warlocks and witches in a dance:
Nae cotillon, brent new frae France, But hornpipes, jigs, strathspeys, and reels, Put life and mettle in their heels."

“Warlocks and Witches in a dance” carving by Thomas H. Tweedy, c1860
