The aftermath of Cumberland’s devastating defeat of Bonnie Prince Charlie and his Jacobite believers at Culloden saw the vengeful rape, pillage and utter destruction of a generation of Highland Scots. During that time, Scotland’s people lost even their right to wear the tartan or to play the bagpipes.

The victorious Cumberland’s lack of humanity or mercy in dealing with the defeated people - man, woman or child - earned him the universal hatred of the Scots and the mantle of ‘the Butcher’.

Of course, as it has ever been in history, he was aided and abetted in his evil by many Scots who saw advantage in associating with the English oppressors.
