Duke of Cumberland
The aftermath of Cumberland’s devastating defeat of Bonnie Prince Charlie and his Jacobite believers at Culloden saw the vengeful rape, pillage and utter destruction of a generation of Highland Scots. During that time, Scotland’s people lost even their right to wear the tartan or to play the bagpipes.
The victorious Cumberland’s lack of humanity or mercy in dealing with the defeated people - man, woman or child - earned him the universal hatred of the Scots and the mantle of ‘the Butcher’.
Of course, as it has ever been in history, he was aided and abetted in his evil by many Scots who saw advantage in associating with the English oppressors.
‘Such A Parcel Of Rogues In A Nation’ - 1790 Robert Burns
“Fareweel to a' our Scottish fame, Fareweel our ancient glory; Fareweel ev'n to the Scottish name, Sae fam'd in martial story.
…The English steel we could disdain, Secure in valour's station; But English gold has been our bane - Such a parcel of rogues in a nation!”
